ADSL

I’m still using an old slow modem at the moment. Have been for quite a while. Recently I’ve started looking at ADSL. The biggest stumbling block so far has been the minimum term on contracts. BT for example is a year. With a bit of luck I may well be living somwhere else well within a year. As such a years contract makes it unviable.

Looking around this evening, I’ve found a couple which offer a month as a minimum term, and also are the “buy your own equipment” style, so if I do cancel, I can use the same stuff someplace else.

If the books balance I may well sign up for something next month.

Work was straight forward enough today, no extreme weather, no extreme problems.

Right.

I've got a simple switchable system working on the front page. You'll find a simple link on the right just above the "powered by" bit.

It works using cookies, so if you've not let any in from this site, it'll not work.

Click your choice, then refresh the page.

You should (well it works here ) get a lighter black on white page, or the original dark scheme depending on your choice.

Let me know your thoughts (I'm pretty sure I'll change the light colours too... they look a little too lilac for my tastes... what do you think). If it works for you all, and you like it, I'll add the code to the remaining pages for you all.

Oh yes, and as for the font sizes... they're next on my list of things to do... once I've got the colours sorted. One step at a time.

First, I think the change in color scheme is much, much better than the grey one that was the default.

But I'm afraid I'm with the redoubtable Don Armstrong on preferring dark type on a light background. Although this is obviously a personal preference, it does make things easier to read. Also, is the font size set to a particular size? If so, it sure is displaying awfully small on my screen. To my poor eyes, it looks like 6pt or so.

Otherwise, things look good and give my regards to your sister for doing well.

A fair comment. I might, if I get time (and of course succeed) have a look at doing a server side, Javascript cookie deal which picks out the correct style sheet, dark on light or vice versa, depending on a cookie.

It might not work, and it might break the site for too many people (people with JS turned off for example), we'll see.

As for colour schemes, this is just a personal opinion, but I've never really been a fan of light engulfed in dark. It seems to me to be just that - the dark surrounds seem to crawl into the lesser amounts of light text, and make it less readable. Up to you, of course, but when I get around to it I'll be doing dark on light - I think it's more easily readable. To see what I mean, just screw up your eyes and try to read what you've got; then highlight it (reversing the colours) and try it again.
