Phil’s Diary - [Blog @ http://www.philsdiary.net/]
Ok, so you’ve just read my previous rant, and it doesn’t stop there.
Not too long ago I had to buy a new motherboard, so I bought an Intel 845G based one, with onboard graphics.
The shipped drivers quite happily supported the 1600x1200x32bit@85HZ refresh that I currently run at.
So one of the first things I did was to upgrade drivers… which suddently stopped that option. I could either do the above at 16bit colour, or change refresh to a flickery 75Hz.
So I emailed Intel tech support who got onto the case, replicated the problem, and then passed it on to their tech team.
Well the verdict is in:
“I just heard back from our development team that this resolution/refresh rate (and a few others) were intentionally removed.
Unfortunately, I am unable to provide assistance on how to add this resolution back into the driver, as this would break WHQL* certification. “
Now while they’re probably right, it’s for WHQL reasons, this is so much bobbins I can’t believe it.
As I say (and they agreed) this card and monitor will quite happily work at this res, however they’ve decided that for my own safety, they won’t let me.
I replied back saying that they don’t do themselves any favours, that when I buy a graphics card to replace this onboard chipset, I’ll obviously not bother with Intel. And of course, in future, I’ll think twice about buying their on-board graphics chipset.
And I’d recommend you think twice about doing the same. Especially if you’re in the same boat as me.
Oh, finally, if any of you know how to tweak the drivers to reallow this res, please let me know.
