Phil’s Diary - [Blog @ http://www.philsdiary.net/]
Ok, so I’ve a machine permenantly hooked up to the internet (or very nearly permenantly), and it’s got a static IP address.
My first thought was to try and get a mailserver working on it.
I’ve been using Mercury for a long while now as an SMTP server, and quite nicely it works too.
So I tried bolting on the POP3 module, and using that. With a little fighting I managed to set up a mailbox for myself, and log into fine.
What I could stop though was the SMTP part looping. I’d deliver a mail to myself, the SMTP server would catch it from the original sender (another PC), and then repeatedly try and deliver it to itself. The End-to-End client would connect to the SMTP server and deliver it back to itself.
Madness.
I’m really not sure how to get around this. The server knows who it is, and the mailbox is there for it to put the mail in… but it doesn’t seem to want to put it there.
Any tips welcome… I’m still scouring the net but haven’t found anything yet.
