Phil’s Diary - [Blog @ http://www.philsdiary.net/]
While I was out in town this morning, someone tried to sell me some religion. I turned them down.
I don’t think I’ve ever clearly set out here my feelings towards religion, so I thought I’d take this opportunity.
If I were to be labelled with a badge, it would be that of an atheist. Put simply I don’t believe that there is any god, Supreme Being or other similar stand-in. I’ve also come to loathe organised religion over the years. While it’s true that there are other elements, religion has certainly been the backbone to a heck of a lot of killing over the years. It’s that alone that nullifies the good of religion in my eyes. That people can kill others and do it in the name of their god is, as far as I can tell, not good.
The flip side is that religion does a lot of good, it sets out rules that allow us to live together, some suggest being helpful, and kind and so on.
But much as that goodness helps societies, the fact that killing still exists in the name of that religion removes that benefit.
So while I see there are benefits to religion, I’d be a happier person if we did away with it. After all it doesn’t always take religion to produce a “nice person”.

Ho, I love God. I mean what's not to like aboud 'God mode' in a D&D game?
Serious though I am not religous either. Religion has always been used to hide unexplained things, preventing people from thinking about them. Religous leaders like to picture themselves as good herdmen, leading the people to safety and good things. Which make it clear people should behave like sheep in their opinion.

Indeed. And considering the huge number of typos in that, perhaps I should be spell checking things a little more often.
