Phil’s Diary - [Blog @ http://www.philsdiary.net/]
Things didn’t go quite according to plan this afternoon. I set off to drive up-to my parents a bit later than usual, at midday. By then it was raining hard and the roads were nice and wet. So the traffic was slow, with plenty of small jams all the way up-to birmingham. Where the usual traffic jam at the M5/M6 junction held me up for a long while.
It was about then I realised I didn’t have any keys to my parents house, so I called up my dad at work, and arranged to drop in and collect them from there.
I eventually got to dad’s school at around 3pm, and he showed me around the newer areas (it’s changed a lot since I was there, with new buildings and changes to the existing ones). By then it was very nearly hope time, and my dad was carless, and expecting a lift from my sister. So as I was there, I called her and said I’d give my dad a lift. He then went out to do bus duty, and I sat and read the papers.
For quite a while.
It turns out that one of the bus drivers had a heart-attack, while waiting for the kids to get on the bus. As one of the trained first-aiders, my dad had stepped in to help, doing full CPR until the ambulance arrived.
The relatives turned up part way through, as did an ambulance crew. They carried on for a long while, but with no success. And so the bus driver died.
I’d kept well out of the way, but it was clear later when I took my dad home (much later than we’d both intended), that it had upset him quiet a lot.
Not quite how I’d hoped my holiday would start. But as ever it could have been worse.
