Transplanting Bits

Another really rather busy day at work today. Another project launch, and then straight into preparing for Monday’s launch.

Back late after work because of that job interview I mentioned.

I got that new motherboard at work today, so I set about trying things out. First off the heat-sink from my P3 doesn’t fit. Second the motherboard beeps no matter what I try.

First indications are that the beeps are memory errors. But as that memory works just fine in my linux box (where it’s now residing, what’s the point in wasting 512Mb of decent memory?), it’s not that.

Best guess is that the CPU is fried. Which is kinda a shame as new Socket 370 CPUs seem to be a little more expensive than the motherboards. I’m pretty sure the old mobo is dead, as the last time I powered it up, it made a lovely popping noise.

So I’ve got a spare case, socket 370 mobo, and 192Mb of memory for it. If you happen to have a socket 370 CPU lying around and are open to reasonable offers, let me know.

My neighbour dropped round briefly to collect a phone number. Unluckily for her I was in the middle of all this computer dismantling, so bits of computer all over the living room floor. God only knows what she thought :)

Anyhow, all that tinkering took it’s time (two computers open to check components work), and it’s time for ER, then some sleep for me (though I’m well awake at the moment).

Those beeps are the good old BIOS code. The sequence and duration of beeps is important. So find an old IBM technician who still knows these beep messages ^_^

Some time ago I had a similar problem (socket-7 mobo) and after swapping out everything I turned in the mobo for a new one. With exactly the same results.
Finally, in the shop, the diagnose was "display card not pressed in deep enough". *blush*
