Bob Thompson has an interesting (to some) post about his experience with Linux crashing more often than his NT boxes, and R.Dobbins comment that Bob is wrong, that Linux never crashes. It’s worth a read just to see how emphatic Mr Dobbins is.
Me? I can’t recall ever having my Linux box crash on me. My Windows one needs a reboot every week to two weeks.
But then I come to expect that. Not because Linux is more stable than Windows, but because I use the two machines for very different purposes.
The Linux isn’t running any sort of GUI, it’s just running a shell. It sits there sharing a few folders, and once a night copying folders across the network. And that’s it.
The Windows box on the other hand is running all sorts of odds and ends, mailserver, tv listings guide, firewall, VPN etc. etc. And then on top of that I use that machine for reading my email, surfing the web, listening to tunes, playing games etc.
All in all I’d expect the Windows box to fall over more than a machine that’s never touched. And it does.
It proves nothing, demonstrates very little, but that’s what happens to me.
