Yep, was a scorcher of a day at work. We’ve not got any aircon, and the bit I work in is in the loft sort of. Big black tiled roof, and upstairsness combine to superheat the room.
Anyway, finished now, on holiday for a week. First things first is talking my parents through rebuilding their machine. Just before they went on holiday the other day their Windows 98 machine decided not to boot Windows. It just locked up once booted. Not good.
Anyway, I know there are lots of things you can try with 98 (autoexec, registry, drivers, removing hardware etc.), but most of those are hard to do over the phone, and aren’t something my parents know much about, so I’d have had to talk them through it.
So this evening it’s doing an over the top reinstall of windows.
If that doesn’t work then things get a bit more complicated, as they’ll have to do it all from DOS (not quite so easy). Actually at that point I’ll probably go and collect the PC And do it myself. Easier all round (yes, I know they won’t learn anything, but I’m not sure that doing it once is going to be enough to teach them anyway, besides, as the PC contains all their work and documents it’s not something you want to be cutting your teeth on).
In between all this I’ll try and watch “Dr Strangelove”, apparently it’s quite good.
More later perhaps.
