One of the guys from work is cooking up a curry for us IT bods tonight, so I’ll be out shortly to some rather nice food.
I got a new 100Mbit Switch today to replace the 10Mbit hub I’ve been using. Straight away that causes a dilemma: The main reason I’m replacing it is to speed up network transfers between my desktop machine and my linux box. Problem is the linux box only has a 10Mbit network card in it. I also have a mostly unused P3-800 with a 100Mbit card in it. The obvious thing to do is switch the cards. But the thought occurs that maybe I should stick Linux on the P3 and replace the whole Linux box as it where.
The big downside to that is the huuuuuge amount of time it would take for me to get the new machine doing what I wanted.
The other downside is that would leave me with a redundant Celeron 300A. As it is I can reasonably easily use the P3 for a VCR if I buy a TV card. And to be honest the Linuxbox is as fast as I need it for pretty much everything.
So I’ll probably tackle changing out the network card at the weekend (and I’ll remember to bring my USB keyboard home from work too, as that’s all the Linuxbox will use).
Anyway, better get going, there’s food waiting.
