Phil’s Diary - [Blog @ http://www.philsdiary.net/]
Another pretty straightforward day at work. The weather has picked up nicely here for a the past couple of days. Last month was the wettest on record, this month at least is starting to look a little more summer like.
Back home and Abi’s off at a work party, and then staying over with a friend there (quite a way from here). So I’m on my own tonight.
With that in mind I set about switching the linux box that hosts this place (and my email, and other such stuff). I was going to start with a blank disk, format and reinstall. But I’ve got a lot of data, lots of config and the like on the old drive, and much as files can be copied, some of the database stuff, and similar won’t be as easy.
So instead I take the daftly easy option of just dropping the old harddisk into the machine. Redhat then does it’s “I’ve found new hardware” bit, which actually is pretty painless. And er, well, it’s all running now. Rather than a Celeron 300A with 364Mb RAM, we’re now running on a P3-800 with 640Mb. It’s not a massive leap (sure, I could have bought a new multi-ghz machine), but hopefully you’ll notice that comments now take a few seconds, rather than a few minutes. And in that vein I’ve spent a while going through the comments templates, tidying them a little. So comments, they’re back and they’re a little faster (they seem to take about 15-20seconds now). They still go to me for checking before going onto the site, but they’re back and working.
In general the sites a bit quicker for me too, pages build quicker, processing happens quicker and so on.
Someday I might start again from scratch, but not just yet.
Anyway, I’m done with linux for now, so I’m off to watch a film for a while. Hope you have a good weekend.
