iMP

Bob Thompson posted a very critical piece earlier today about the BBC’s new iMP media player. I broadly agree with Bob’s ideas, and suggestions, especially that already broadcast item should in essence become public domain, and that trying to stop people doing what they already can, and really should be able to, is wrong.

However from my own personal point of view, I’d much rather be able to use the iMP facilities legally, then download illegal copies of the program.

For sure the restrictions put in place are irritating, after all it’d be much nicer to build up a small archive of favourite programs, or send the program to a friend (something, incidentally you have been able to do for years with VCRs), the fact you can’t with this product won’t stop me using it. I’d rather do something legally with a few limitations, than do it illegally.

I do wish they’d come to their sense as Bob suggests, but until they do, I’ll go down this route (when it becomes available).
