Nearly Over

We’re into the last few days of our holiday in Greece now, and while I’ll miss the endless sunny warm weather, the great food, and more than anything, doing nothing, there are some creature comforts I’ve missed, and in a non-pessimist type of way, look forward to getting back.

Off into Molyvos reasonably early this morning to sort out a hire car to the airport on Thursday, and to pay for and collect Abi’s bracelet.

Returning to the car we find we’ve landed ourselves with a parking ticket. Greek roads are pretty behind the times to say the least. You can start with the lack of road markings. You’re lucking if you get one up the centre, certainly none at the edges, and at junctions, well they all just stop and it’s a free-or-all. None of those markings are reflective, so night driving is interesting to say the least. Their idea of signage for parking is pretty abysmal too. They use the “clearway” sign to indicate no parking. Which is ok, except they never bother to indicate where it ends. I’ve moaned plenty about the roads in the UK, but there’s a few things the Greeks could learn from a holiday in the UK.

Anyway, we head off to pay the parking ticket, which in itself turns out to be a bit of a challenge. We head first to the only police station we know about. They don’t really speak English, but say we can’t pay there. Try another one. So we try the station hidden in Molyvos. Another non-English speaker, who again says we can’t pay there, we need the town hall. So we head over there, bit of a trek, lots of hills, an hand over the money… Quite a bit of it.

Wish I knew Greek, ‘cause none of people we spoke to knew any English.

The afternoon passes peacefully enough and so we head off back to Eftalou for some tea. Some of the fantastic baby tuna for me, which tasted just as amazing as last time. Abi has some fresh Calamari, which I think she’s pretty happy with too. By the time we get home we’re both knackered so we get off to bed.
