The replacement power supply showed up today. I didn’t get home from work until very late though because of some out of hours stuff that needed doing.
Back home though and the new power supply does the same as the old.…. so it ain’t the power supply.
This leaves us with a bit of a problem. We could keep working through replacing each bit one at a time (We don’t have oodles of spares as such. We’ve basically 3 PCs one a P3, the broken one an early P4, and the Dell is a bit current… as such we can’t easily swap bits in and out as they’re mostly incompatible). Or we could scrap it and manage without or buy a new one at a later date.
We decide to have a think about it and head off to bed.
I have a sleepless night (no, not caused by the PC, but lots of other things instead), and so spend my insomniac hours checking out motherboards, to try and find one that’ll work with a 2-3year old PC. Not easy believe me. In the end I find a likely candidate. It’s socket 478, support slow enough bus and memory speeds, still has supports Parallel ATA and old style PCI. So I order that at around 2:30am. And then try a bit more to get to sleep.
